Tesla's flat trunk floors are great for hauling but terrible for protecting the carpet from groceries, muddy gear, and dog hair. A cargo mat is one of those accessories you don't think about until you need it — and by then, the stain is already set.
We compared cargo mats and trunk liners across all Tesla models from 8 stores. Whether you need a basic flat mat or a full multi-piece cargo protection system with sub-trunk coverage, here's what works best for each model.
Flat cargo mats
are simple sheets that cover the trunk floor. Cheapest option, basic protection against dirt and scratches, but liquids run off the edges and under the mat.
Raised-edge trunk liners
have 10-20mm walls around the perimeter that contain spills, mud, and snow melt. This is the most popular choice and what we recommend for most owners.
Multi-piece cargo systems
include separate pieces for the main trunk floor, sub-trunk storage well, trunk side walls, and sometimes the rear seat back protector. Maximum protection but highest cost ($100-200+ for a complete set).
Our recommendation:
A raised-edge trunk liner covers 90% of use cases. Add sub-trunk and side wall pieces only if you regularly haul messy cargo or have dogs.
Model Y
has the most cargo mat options because it's the best-selling Tesla. The sub-trunk storage well is deep and worth protecting separately. 7-seat Model Y has a different cargo area than 5-seat — always verify.
Model 3 Highland
has a redesigned trunk compared to pre-2024 models. Pre-Highland cargo mats don't fit the Highland. Additionally, the Highland's powered trunk means the mat must not interfere with the trunk motor.
Model Y Juniper (2025+)
has a redesigned rear cargo area. Pre-2025 Model Y cargo mats will not fit properly.
Cybertruck
needs a bed mat (covered in our Cybertruck accessories guide) plus a frunk mat and cabin cargo area protection. The stainless steel bed is especially prone to scratching.
Model S/X
have unique trunk shapes. Model X's falcon wing doors mean the cargo area has different access angles. Fewer aftermarket options exist compared to Model 3/Y.
TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer)
is the best material for cargo mats. It's waterproof, odorless, flexible in extreme temperatures, and easy to clean with a hose. Most premium Tesla cargo mats use TPE.
Rubber
works well but may smell when new and can become stiff in cold weather. Cheaper than TPE.
Carpet-backed liners
look OEM but offer minimal spill protection. Only suitable for owners who never haul anything messy.
Thickness matters:
Look for mats at least 3mm thick. Thinner mats curl at the edges and provide less impact protection. Premium options are 5-6mm thick.
The sub-trunk storage well in the Model Y is deep enough to warrant its own mat. If you use it for storing your charging cable, emergency kit, or groceries, a sub-trunk mat prevents scratches and makes cleaning easier. Some cargo mat sets include it; otherwise, budget $20-40 extra.
No. The 2025 Model Y Juniper has a redesigned rear cargo area. You need a Juniper-specific cargo mat. Always check the product listing for "Juniper" or "2025+" compatibility.
Remove the mat from the trunk, shake off debris, then spray with a garden hose. For stubborn stains, use mild soap and water with a soft brush. TPE and rubber mats can handle pressure washing. Air dry before reinstalling.
