About Tesla Charging
Home charging is the most convenient and cost-effective way to keep your Tesla charged. Most owners plug in every night and wake up to a full battery. The right home charging setup saves hundreds of dollars per year compared to relying on Superchargers, which charge per kWh at premium rates.
Level 2 chargers (240V) are the standard for home Tesla charging. They deliver 30-44 miles of range per hour, which means a typical Model 3 or Model Y goes from 20% to 90% in about 8-10 hours overnight. Level 1 charging (regular 120V outlet) only adds 3-5 miles per hour and is not practical as a daily solution for most drivers.
The two main installation approaches are plug-in (NEMA 14-50 outlet) and hardwired. A plug-in charger connects to a 240V dryer-style outlet that an electrician installs — this is simpler, portable, and typically costs $300-500 for the outlet installation. Hardwired chargers are permanently mounted and can support higher amperages, but require more electrical work and aren't portable if you move.
Buying Tips
- 48-amp Level 2 chargers are the fastest option for home use — they're the max rate your Tesla's onboard charger can handle
- Measure cable length from your electrical panel to your parking spot — 25 feet is standard but you may need a longer cord
- UL-listed chargers have been independently tested for electrical safety — don't skip this certification for a product that handles high voltage
- Smart chargers with WiFi let you schedule off-peak electricity rates and monitor energy usage from your phone
